Ecuador's minister of foreign affairs has filed a protest with the U.S. Embassy after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tried to enter the Ecuadorian consulate in Minneapolis without permission Tuesday.
A video of the attempt on social media shows a consulate staffer running to the door to turn the ICE agents away, telling them, "This is the Ecuadorian consulate. You're not allowed to enter."
One ICE officer can be heard responding by threatening to "grab" the staffer if he touched the agent before agreeing to leave.
International law generally prohibits law enforcement authorities from entering foreign consulates or embassies without permission, though sometimes permission may be assumed granted for life-threatening emergencies, like fires

............Consulate officials immediately prevented the ICE officer from entering the consular building, thus ensuring the protection of the Ecuadorians who were present at the time and activating the emergency protocols issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, the ministry wrote on X.
A note of protest was filed with the U.S. embassy in Ecuador so that similar attempts arent made at other consulates, the ministry said.
The State Department, Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Maybe they should charge the Russian embassy.

(166 posts)I'd like to know the reason ICE agents wanted to go into the embassy. They need to answer for their actions.

I mean......A CONSULATE?
Is this the Onion?.Do these people who instigated this even know what an Consulate is or what it's for?
Were they just Morons who figured there's a bunch of easy marks in there? Judging by some of the shitheads (I casually know a couple guys who joined. That's another tale!) who they recruit for ICE I'm assuming they had absolutely no idea what an Consulate is.
My jaw dropped in disbelief when I heard this. Are you sure this isn't fake news or SNL or the Borowitz report or something satirical or................Just don't tell me it's true!
Nope!

(546 posts)You hear it on the news and occasionally see it in police dramas where they can't detain someone because they have diplomatic immunity. Julian Assange holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London to avoid extradition to the US.
These new ICE hires are violent racist idiots.
