A former Illinois deputy is sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing Sonya Massey

Source: Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A former Illinois sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting Sonya Massey, who had dialed 911 to report a possible prowler outside her Springfield home.

Sean Grayson, 31, was convicted in October. Grayson, who is white, received the maximum possible sentence. He has been incarcerated since he was charged in the killing.

Massey’s family members, who were sitting in the court, greeted the sentence with a loud cheer: Yes!” The judge admonished them.

Grayson apologized during the sentencing, saying he wished he could bring Massey back and spare her family the pain he caused.

She was just moving a pot of boiling water off a burner, nowhere near the cop, who just shot her in the middle of her kitchen. The person she called for help murdered her.

appeared and you thought it was the perp so you fired before realizing it was the homeowner.

“I made a lot of mistakes that night.

That wasn't a mistake. That was the action of a self-entitled brute who thought he was allowed to throw his weight around because it was a female Black. You knew she wasn't a danger to you. You knew what you were doing.

You are sorry - a sorry excuse for a human being. You took the life of an innocent human for no reason and you only got 20 years.

His attorney had asked for a sentence of six years, noting that Grayson has late stage colon cancer that has spread to his liver and lungs.

She is dead and he willfully did it. If he has cancer, then I am sorry to have him suffer with that disease. But he got away with 20 years instead of life, although he may not last that long. But cancer was not a mitigating circumstance that deserved giving him a lighter sentence.
