ICE's Campaign Of Terror Is Not Over, Says Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey

WASHINGTON When border czar Tom Homan announced last week that the Trump administrations surge of immigration agents in Minnesota was over, he said the drawdown would begin immediately and carry through this week.
But while theres anecdotal evidence of fewer Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions around Minneapolis, federal agents are still very present and residents are still terrified. It certainly hasnt stopped, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a Thursday interview. I fully understand why people are very much on edge.
Frey said he gets daily reports on ICE activity in the city, but its not objective data because ICE doesnt share its information with his office. Instead, his team tracks the number of residents calling into 9-1-1 with reports of a family member getting kidnapped by federal agents, for example, or ICE slamming somebody on a car. When police respond to these calls and confirm ICE is on the scene, they file a report and the mayors office flags it.
This anecdotal information used to show between 10 to 30 ICE actions every day, said Frey, and over the last couple of days, those numbers have dropped to one or zero. Its a good sign, he said, but it doesnt mean much has changed materially for Minneapolis immigrants who have been so traumatized by ICEs monthslong campaign of terror against them that they havent stepped outside of their homes, in some cases, for eight or nine weeks.

(13 posts)days after the alleged drawdown as before it was announced. Its been a tough impact on our city and state. But if we can continue to bog down 10% of their force here in a state that has an estimated 1% of undocumented migrants, it may be worthwhile sacrifice overall. They wont reach their quotas with that math.

(13,372 posts)It turns out that murdering people on the streets and showing up at protesters' homes to threaten them is not a good political strategy. An NYT article reports that Republicans are no longer feeling so confident after all the UCE attacks. As an aside, this article was on the front digital page for about an hour early this morning and then moved off. Even the Times too often slants headlines and buries articles critical of Trump policies.
"A scandal over fraud in social service programs had become the dominant issue, threatening to tank Gov. Tim Walzs bid for a third term and drag down fellow Democrats in this years midterm elections. A large slate of Republicans running for governor saw a chance for their party to win a statewide race for the first time in 20 years.
Only a few months later, the political landscape looks far different. The Trump administrations immigration crackdown in the region has upended the policy debate as state lawmakers begin a new session in the Capitol. And Governor Walz, facing mounting criticism over the fraud scandal, including from the White House, ended his re-election campaign, paving the way for another Democrat, Senator Amy Klobuchar, to run for governor.
If wrecking the G.O.P. brand in Minnesota was the Trump administrations actual assignment, then A-plus, 10 out of 10 execution, said Chris Madel, a prominent defense lawyer who suspended his campaign for governor as a Republican last month, citing his outrage over the conduct of immigration agents during the federal surge."

(25,426 posts)They are creating even more camps across the country. Who else will they round up besides immigrants for so many camps with such large spaces to warehouse people? Why are they being housed in such remote locations?
Congress needs to ask these questions in hearings. Congress also needs to establish some oversight inspections, both scheduled and unscheduled ones. This needs to be codified onto law and enforced.

(167,817 posts)The ONLY way this will happen is to WIN BACK ONE OR BOTH CHAMBERS of Congress. That will REMOVE the gutless GOP COWARDS from the Chair positions and replace them with OUR members so that the hearings can commence. Only THEN will some kind of oversight start to happen.
Otherwise we have no control over "official" Committee scheduling or activities and have been forced to do "shadow hearings" to carry out that function - at least "for the record".

(25,426 posts)get out the vote AND to have our own people present at voting sites when ICE shows up there.

(23,865 posts)Reality is that ICE remains a murderous presence.
I wonder if Stephen Miller sent Bari Weiss, et al., a memo suggesting they focus more on other, less important stories?

(8,555 posts)or sufficient evidence. They are NOT peace officers of any kind and are not authorized to do law enforcement other than Immigration enforcement.
They have violated the civil and legal rights of Minnesota citizens. The state is empowered to act in defense of those rights by the state and federal constitutions.
