Kellogg's to lay off 451 Omaha employees as it prepares to permanently close plant

Source: Omaha World Herald

Grace Lewis May 29, 2026 Updated 26 mins ago

About 450 workers are set to lose their jobs by mid-August as Kellogg's formally notified the state of the timeline for its Omaha plant's permanent closure.

WK Kellogg Co, based in Battle Creek, Michigan, filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the Nebraska Department of Labor on May 22, confirming a phased layoff that will eliminate 451 positions at the Omaha plant at 9601 F St.

The filing puts firm dates on the plant's permanent closure first announced in August 2024.

Initial layoffs are expected to begin in July, affecting about 100 workers, the company said. A second wave of about 350 employees will lose their jobs on or after the period from Aug. 4 to 18, after which the plant will permanently cease operations.

The Kellogg's plant at 9601 F St. in Omaha will close by the end of 2026

The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) endorsed Kamala Harris for President in the 2024 election. The union's leadership—including International President Anthony Shelton—was highly supportive of the Democratic ticket, citing the administration's pro-labor policies, support for collective bargaining, and historic pension protections.

Just because the local backed Biden doesn't mean the members did. I bet 60% of my local voted Trump, yet our Union backed Biden/Harris

And shit on Unions regularly. So, I'm sure many of those Union brothers and sisters are anti-Union and DID NOT vote for Kamala. But, they enjoyed their pay and benefits. Paradoxically. We are talking Red State. It's like they have a brain disorder.

decades and then turn around and vote for Republicans who would throw any and ALL unions in the dumpster first chance they get. A few more years like the last two and unions will be made ILLEGAL.

Stupid is as stupid does. Labor laws have been watered down by every repuglican administration since. We tried to hold up the labor laws but their lack of support has been their undoing - on the local and state level as well. So don't blame me for thinking they were Dump voters. I have empathy for those that weren't.

Omaha has a democratic mayor, democratic city council, and went for Harris in 2024 and Biden in 2020.

Blue.

'Cause some union members, like cops, do not.

And I worked with plenty of Republican members of the NEA (teachers).

But yeah, this Kelloggs closure ain't good.

I buy Cascadian Farms, Kashi and 365 brands. Often no sugar but when it is it is cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. Also usually organic. I don’t actually pay that much more. Since I eat cereal everyday I try to keep my glyphosate consumption down.

Less fertilizer = less cereal to process.
Are they counting on a key shift in their demographics?
