Environmentalists call for investigation after birds found dead near reflecting pool

A national environmental advocacy group is calling for an investigation into the deaths of birds at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The Center for Biological Diversity said it is aware of three birds, including a duckling, that have died in and around the pool, which recently underwent a $15 million renovation.
The project, touted by President Donald Trump, included applying a blue coating to the pool's bottom. After the pool was refilled, algae developed and turned the water green. Officials then began using hydrogen peroxide to combat the algae.
"While a definitive investigation is necessary, it is quite probable that dumping of hydrogen peroxide, peeling paint that was used as part of an effort to make the pool look more blue, or algal blooms that followed the restoration effort contributed to the deaths," the Center for Biological Diversity said in a statement.
The group said the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is meant to protect the birds and that the National Park Service is responsible for enforcing the law. "No individual, corporation or government official should be above the nation's wildlife-protection laws," the Center for Biological Diversity said.

(809 posts)No shit, Surelock. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. We'll just put it on Dimwit Donnie's tab and collect from the estate after he's dead.

(48,010 posts)is healthy for the birds. Whose bright idea was it to dump hydrogen peroxide into the pool?

(173,448 posts)But I expect the problem wasn't the peroxide but some leachate coming from whatever was used to seal the concrete slab before adding the blue colored coating.

(48,010 posts)And the workers were dumping a lot of it into the pool.

(173,448 posts)Pouring gallon jugs into what is basically a 4 block long shallow "lake" was probably ineffective (they would have needed a tanker of the stuff and since peroxide is unstable, it easily breaks down into water and oxygen anyway).
What has so far gotten rid of the most obvious algae, was their literal manual scraping and vacuuming the slime off the slab, section by section. That's what people do with fish tanks (I used to have 3 - freshwater tropical, saltwater marine, and saltwater reef with live sand and live corals). But in this case, that suctioning obviously loosened the coating and who knows what might be leaching into the water.
Bodies of water that are not maintained as highly-treated swimming pools, go through a natural biological cycle and right now, that has been disrupted. I saw some article where some CT-spewing MAGats were whining about someone putting phosphorus in the water.
Who cares if there are large grassy areas on both side with plants and trees that are routinely fertilized with some N-P-K ratio of fertilizer.
