The Trump administration issued subpoenas on Friday to several journalists for The New York Times, after the news outlet reported this week on security concerns involving President Trumps new Qatari-donated Air Force One. The subpoenas which seek to force the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday were an extraordinary escalation in President Trumps efforts to threaten and intimidate independent news organizations.
In some cases, the subpoenas were delivered by federal agents who showed up at reporters homes. The Times denounced the administrations actions.
The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects, said David McCraw, The Timess top newsroom lawyer, in a statement on Friday evening.
Our journalists report the facts and advance the American publics right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used, Mr. McCraw wrote. This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.

(9,077 posts)they repackaged a grab them by the pussy profanity spewing know-nothing tv clown and sold him as a serious candidate, insisting Trump, a vengeful racist thug/sexual pervert, would grow in office ..and a decade later they are still cleaning up his verbal vomit, referencing his lies, insults, and threats as thought-provoking political dialogue ..

(431 posts)and it's a war that continues to this day. Maybe if the NYT had held W to the barest standard that they're now trying to belatedly hold Trump to Bush would not have been able to get close enough in Florida to steal the 2000 election which the NYT also praised. Bush's 2000 election stealing is what made Trump possible.

(13,686 posts)Trump is trying to create media fawns on him and praises his every action. We already have far too many media outlets that do exactly that. I cannot imagine that a sane judge would allow this intimidation. Of course, Trump has appointed quite a few sycophant judges with warped views of the law.

(7,774 posts)I cancelled both the NYT AND WaPo years ago when they reached toxic levels of fealty.
I am reconsidering a NYT subscription again because they seem to also deliver excellent content along with diminished MAGAt clickbait.
My point? Media outlets change and progressives should evaluate based on current reporting, not just failed past effortsbe liberal.

(8,978 posts)Isn't the appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters the sort of thing communists like Trump's friend Putin would do during his time at the KGB?

The subpoenas suggest the Trump administration is trying to find out who leaked to The Times before the news organization reported this week that President Donald Trump left a NATO summit in Turkey on the old Air Force One over security concerns from the Secret Service.
The orders for the journalists to testify came after FBI Director Kash Patel met with officials at the White House on Friday to discuss the bureaus investigation into disclosures about security concerns with the new plane, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.....
Sources told CNN that Trump has been fuming at the reports of security concerns surrounding the $400 million gift from Qatar, and was embarrassed and angry in recent days when it became public that the plane was not equipped enough to be flown directly from Turkey back home......
But CNN reported Thursday that security personnel felt more comfortable with the president aboard the older Air Force One which was built from scratch with presidential safety in mind rather than the plane that had recently been retrofitted after it was donated by Qatar.
Trump then switched planes at a secure US airbase in the UK. He downplayed the idea security was the reason for the switch, though sources have told CNN and other outlets that it was.
