(73,993 posts)We have a few inches but no trails open--and now last few days-the snow is crusting and can't ski anyways unless you want to risk a fall and broken bones!!

(291 posts)The National Weather Service had two locations in Northern MN where the temperature dipped to -42 (air temperature - not windchill). It is brutally cold - like Siberia without the polar bears.

(26 posts)DeKalb, IL, December, '81, was BAD with snow, wind, and cold. My father had died in November but my sister and I were unable to make it home for Christmas because the the cold and drifting snow. It was very distressing for all of us.
January, '82, was even worse. Every road out of town was blown shut for the whole month. Grocery deliveries weren't able to get thru to the stores many days. (I was well stocked so no problem.) Police were posted at the roads out of town because just beyond the last house it was a complete white-out. One road had a jack-knifed semi blocking the entire road a couple hundred yards into the white-out that you absolutely could not see. Outside of town, the drifts were as tall as the wooden electrical poles on some roads. They later had to use front end loaders to clear them because the snow plows couldn't do it.
The winds were HORRIBLE. The radio reported that cars were being blown sideways off icy roads into the ditch. I stayed out of the room that faced the wind because I feared the glass might blow out. One morning, the radio ordered people to not even open their doors because some storm doors had been ripped off their hinges by the wind.
Temps were subzero all month. Wind chills were ghastly, and on one day, the wind chill was -100F below zero!
You better believe I have gotten lots of mileage out of this story down thru the years!
When orange man moved yesterday's event inside, I just laughed and laughed as I walked coatless to the mailbox in 20 degree weather. Midwest strong!
