I was allowed to set them up once a year. A photo from the last Dinosaur Toast in 2019 where I had set the big guys out.

I miss that neighborhood.

(154 posts)help myself! I have books galore and still cant pass a bookstore without going in and leaving with at least one. I still have vinyl, cassettes and CDs and a bunch in iTunes on my computer. With rocks I am equally hopeless. For a time, I made myself only pick up heart shaped rocks but I confess I have strayed from that promise. 😁

My prize possession was a beautiful piece of iron pyrite (fool's gold). Looked liked 3 ounces of gold in a brown rock!
I had 6 or 7 colors of quartz, oxyx, different kinds of sandstone, and so on.
I was probably into it until I was about 12.

(19,569 posts)Most everything is gone w moves.
I had about 200+ SF books, and 250+ vanilla albums.
I still have about half my political buttons; all mine except one small Kennedy (JFK) button from my uncle. So from Humphrey through Hillary. I didn't get to a Obama's HQ so no campaign buttons, but I went to his Inauguration, so I picked up buttons there.
My sis has kept 10 albums, and a bunch of singles for me.
I think I have a dino left. But almost no SF books.
I still have one 1 inch square Pyrite. A 5" inch slab of Slate that has little squares (3/8, 1/8, 1/16) of pyrite, or an indentation where one was. It's cool looking. And one turquoise looking probably copper related rock. Oh, and tiny "Herkimer diamonds" from when we went on a dig there!"
My mom and I would get geodes, and break them open.

(261 posts)I began collecting David Winter cottages during my first tour in England in the 80s and I kept collecting them for years during my second tour of England and while in the States. The cottages are made of gypsum and are hand-painted by artists in their homes. All the cottages imaginary and vary in size. I have about 50 cottages sitting on top of my entertainment center. I have some of them signed by David Winter, the artist, who created them. My best, and most expensive piece, is The Millennium At Horseshoe Bay in honor of the Millennium, (picture below) which was signed by him during his visit to Sacramento. The cottages aren't worth much, IMO, by have more sentimental value to me. What I like about them is when you look at them you can imagine a story about the cottage.

(12,987 posts)Statues of Egyptian Gods.
I have the entire Hachette Egyptian God collection.
When I began collecting them I saw how badly they were painted and I thought that shitty paint job is not worthy of the Gods. So I repainted all 110 Gods. They are much more beautiful. These statues came out in England Europe and Australia as a series like 15 years ago they are fragile and some Gods are really hard to find. In America if you buy them 1 by 1 they can cost as much as 30 bucks each because of shipping.
Also I cant turn down a cool looking rock.
Or a wicked beautiful cat statue.

(578 posts)Inherited a collection from my father who collected in the 60's and 70's. Decided to research to find out what they were, started collection on a small scale myself with a small budget and before I know it, I purchased books to learn about what I see around me, match what I read in the books and it was down hill from then. On a plus note it was for "investment for the future".

Some of the vinyls and books I have are "collectors items"
Right now, I'm cataloging items to complement my estate planning, to turn them over to organizations directly or by auction.
In particular, I'm getting broadside posters from past Clearwater Hudson River Revival festivals framed up to be ready for auction when I pass on. I've got those dating back to 1984, as well as their program books.
