(54,594 posts)I don't think I've had more than 3 hiccups at a time in decades.

(52,679 posts)So ... crane your neck back a little, lean back at the waist slightly, all to extend and relax the airway. Then pay careful attention to your own body and when you feel the air coalescing, squeeze slightly your diaphragm and be sure to relax the air in that instant to let the air really be expelled.
Now that I know what is happening and what to do I rarely have hiccups, only two or three cycles. Most often I feel it starting and immediately relax and expel. Voila, no hiccups.
All the other remedies like drinking water are to shake up the system to get that expulsion going. Simpler to just tune into your body, to really feeling it somatically, deep inside. There are internal sensory nerves for exactly that purpose though usually their sensations are passed to the 'unconscious' nervous system.
Become more conscious. Many many benefits besides no hiccups.

seconds. I am thinking that the breathing, impacted by the closed-up bag over your head, somehow affects/helps your breathing, getting rid of the hiccups.
Meant a paper sack too!

(2,727 posts)I get them fairly often. Nothing would get rid of them. I would count them, going for the Guinness record, but would usually get bored around 200-300. My stomach would first just get upset, and then nausea would set in from the constant clenching of my diaphragm. Anything I might have been doing would have to stop because they were so disruptive. Of course finishing dinner was out of the question so I just left my spouse to eat alone.
Then I discovered a small straw called HiccAway. After decades of debilitating hiccupsthey are gone in about 10 seconds using that straw! Its truly amazing. A life-changer for me!
