(9,441 posts)I love that film!
I love it too.
I actually saw it on Broadway in 2005. It starred Alan Alda; Jeffrey Tambor; Liev Schreiber (who won a Tony award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Ricky Roma); Gordon Clapp; Tom Wopat; and Frederick Weller. The part Alec Baldwin played in the film was written specifically for him and was not in the play.

(2,645 posts)I bought a poster and waited outside the theater and got four of the actors to sign it (didn't get Alan Alda or Jeffrey Tambor; they must have left earlier or later than the autograph seekers waiting outside). As soon as I got home, I had the poster framed. Paid $15.00 for the poster and $115 for framing - ha! I didn't mind. It's one of my most prized possessions.
Several years later, there was another revival of it on Broadway with Al Pacino playing Shelley Levine. Boy, would I have loved to see that one.
There are parts of that movie where the dialog is almost lyrical. I'm not a big fan of David Mamet, but he sure got this one right.

(4,127 posts)... Newman and Redford met on the set, and became close friends. And friendship between those two meant ever more elaborate pranks.
When Redford made the Milagro Beanfield War, there was a scene in which the daughter of the protagonist was in a small store, and went to pick up a Newman's Own product off the shelf, but was quickly dissuaded by the clerk, who said, "Oh, you don't want that crap!" or words to that effect. Legend has it that they razzed each other unmercifully.
I had the pleasure of meeting Newman a few times, and he was a delightful guy. The first time was at Lime Rock race track in Connecticut. I was crewing for a friend who drove Formula Ford, and Lanny introduced me to him, He was sitting in a lawn chair next to his camper with his Nomex suit stripped off down to his waist, and he was wearing a T-shirt that read, "PAUL NEWMAN HAS SKINNY LAIGS!" It was a gift from his daughters, apparently. Pranks ran in the family, I guess.
Harker
(17,747 posts)Given the extent to which they are thought of as a matched set, it's remarkable that they only acted together in two movies.
... Butch and Sundance, plus The Sting, but they had a helluva good time doing it!
