(2,656 posts)and a lot of people grew up in the 60s. It's not all that obscure. It actually won a Grammy in 1965.
hlthe2b
(113,815 posts)You seem to have thought I was being insulting. If so, you misunderstood me. Because it came out in 1964 (won the Grammy in 1965), I would guess a lot of DUers have not heard it. That was my only intent with that comment.
MIButterfly
(2,656 posts)I'm sorry if my comment came off that way. I just thought that you didn't know it was such a popular song and I only meant to point out that it was very well-known back in the day. I apologize for not being more clear about what I was trying to say.
And you're absolutely right; the non-boomers probably wouldn't know this song. It hasn't been played a lot over the years like other oldies have.

(15,402 posts)traditional folk ballad - lifted by the Animals to become a beloved and enormous international success - and sometimes attributed as the original 'folk rock' hit.
hlthe2b
(113,815 posts)describe the very perfect Animals song depicting their seamier history (then again, what isn't) as a "traditional folk ballad.." Just sayin LOL. But, I love that song. Good choice.

(72,121 posts)I was assigned to a low-readiness unit on Fort Knox. Depressing. The debate over Dont Ask, Dont Tell was raging in Congress. And I spent as much time off post and away from the homophobes as I could. Being a straight LGBTQ ally back then was not popular in the military.
The gay crowd in the St. Mathews district in Louisville took me in and made me feel welcome. I was their pet gay-friendly soldier. I had discovered Concrete Blonde right around then, and used to wander the streets of St. Mathews at night listening to this song on my Walkman. (Remember those?)
It was then that I embraced my inner liberal and decided not to hide it anymore. It helped that Johnette Napolitano, lead singer of Concrete Blonde, is a ferociously outspoken liberal and progressive.
I love this song

(1,919 posts)My defense is that my son has been endlessly recounting to me (for 15 minutes) how hes spent his day trying to find an old version of some video editing thingie that will still work, and my brain is apparently mush.
He finally relented when I burst out laughing because he gave me a flashback to an old Steve Martin joke:
"This lawn supervisor was out on a sprinkler maintenance job, and he started working on a Findley sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7 inch gangly wrench. Well, his little apprentice leans over and says 'you can't work on a Findley sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7 inch wrench'. Well, this infuriated the supervisor so he went and got volume 14 of the Kinsley manual. And he said 'look right here it says the Langstrom 7 inch wrench can be used with a Findley sprocket!' Just then the little apprentice leaned over and said 'it says socket not sprocket."

I am glad it was mentioned relatively quickly (No. 13) above.
Sometimes, the title of the song is referred to as "Sunshine (Go Away Today)" to avoid confusion with other songs which bear the word "sunshine" in their titles.
Mr. Edwards claims that, all along, he intended the song as an anthem of protest to the Vietnam War. It was indeed adopted by protesters of the war.
The legend is that the song was not deemed to be good enough to be included in Mr. Edwards's debut album, but that it had to be included in order to fill out the slate of tracks because an engineer accidentally erased another song which has been intended for the album.
