What would you do? My Keurig died last week. It lasted a measly 2 1/2 years. I bought it at Costco so they'll take it

back and give me a refund. I scored a new Keurig today on sale for $100. at another retailer.

Would you return the dead Keurig to Costco or just write off the $100.+ it cost?

I have a one-mug ceramic press that I use at home, and an insulated stainless steel 34 oz press that I take for work when I make coffee for myself and a couple others.

At home, I have what I should probably consider an embarrassingly-complex ritual that I go through to make myself HOT coffee, and it's sooooooo good. It is more work, and it does take longer than just pushing a button.

At work and traveling with the group, I just make the large press of coffee, dump the grinds and that's all. It's not that much more work.

A while back, I stayed a week at a place that only had a Keurig so I bought a box of K-cups from a local roaster whose beans I often buy when I'm in that city. It was a lot better than the starbucks and Folgers cups provided, but not even close to as good as the exact same coffee made in a french press.

It's also a quick and easy way to make tea and hot chocolate.

I've been known to drink cheap beer too.

My wife prefers quality.

I like to keep things simple.

The ritual of making or buying coffee does nothing for me.

My wife bought a Keurig as some kind of compromise.

We have a French press, manual drip coffee maker, and grinder so we can make fancy coffee if we choose to. We've also got the reusable k-cups. Most days those sit in the cupboard.

When I'm being an annoying environmentalist I'd say that simply growing coffee is bad for the environment. There may be ways of getting a caffeine fix with similar ritual that have a smaller environmental footprint.

Pour through glass, with a very fine mesh stainless steel paperless filter.

Big batches a stovetop old fashioned steel percolator.

$8.99 and you use #2 sized filters.

Works well for commercial ground coffee (Maxwell House, Chock Full 'O Nuts) as well as home-ground and store-ground beans.

Just don't chip or break it.

It's simply your turn to be covered.

I'm learning new ways to coffee. The rec is to buy light roast beans, grind fresh weekly, to max chlorogenic acid. Not sure the hardware I'll use. Boiled water over grounds is my low-tech method for years.

P. Mail me if you want some information on a little local coffee place in Columbus. He roasts his
own beans and ships them anyplace. Btw I get nothing out of this. It really is a small business.

Nearly all plastic is non-recyclable.
Other than sneaker uppers & carpets, the amount of recycle that can be used in new plastics is very small.
7% recycle is considered very good. 4 or 5% much more likely.
None at all is still too common.
Compound that with the fact that people only feed about 70% of plastics into the recycle stream and plastic recycling starts to look more like myth than reality.
It's why I'm such a strong proponent of a return to paper.
Milk, juices, household cleaners, prepared meats, bags for groceries....
Those things, made of paper/cardboard, served us well for a couple hundred years. Going back to that offers no downside to the consumer & eliminates millions of tons of plastic waste.

But please, at least switch to compostable pods.
