Mishal Husain
Editor at Large, Bloomberg Weekend
In his speech to the U.S. Congress yesterday, British monarch King Charles III said that "executive power is subject to checks and balances." This was met with rousing bipartisan applause. Charles' address included plenty of subtle but significant rebukes to President Trump's beliefs and style of governance from raising the issue of climate change to defending NATO and supporting Ukraine. Today the King and Queen are honoring the victims of 9/11 in New York City. So far, the King's state visit looks like a masterclass in subtle diplomacy. Mishal Husain is the Editor at Large of Bloomberg Weekend and she joins the program.
Wendy Sherman
Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State
and
Vali Nasr
Professor, School of Advanced International Studies, John Hopkins University
Today is day 60 of the U.S.-Iran war. In a social media post on Tuesday, President Trump said Iran has informed the U.S. that it is "in a state of collapse." He insists that Tehran wants the Strait of Hormuz open "as they try to figure out their leadership." Yet there is no evidence to support these claims. Wendy Sherman served as Deputy Secretary of State under President Joe Biden. Iranian-American academic Vali Nasr was a State Department official under President Obama. Nasr and Sherman join Christiane to discuss.
Adm. William McRaven (Ret.)
Author, Duty, Honor, Country & Life
With diplomacy between Iran and the U.S. in stalemate, retired Admiral William McRaven argues that the President must sideline nuclear talks and focus on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz if he wants to save the world economy. McRaven, whose military career spanned nearly four decades, oversaw the Navy SEALS raid that killed Osama bin Laden. McRaven's speeches like "Make Your Bed," for a graduation ceremony in 2014 have become widely known, and he has collated many of them into his new book "Duty, Honor, Country & Life." The Admiral speaks with Walter Isaacson.
