Park opponents look to set Great Highway on road to November ballot
As promised, a group of west-side San Francisco residents filed paperwork Friday morning to begin collecting signatures for a November ballot initiative to reopen Great Highway on weekdays to vehicular traffic.
Nearly 55% of city voters who went to the polls in 2024 submitted ballots in favor of permanently closing the road to cars, clearing the way for the creation of the new oceanfront Sunset Dunes park.
“By this initiative, San Franciscans seek to restore the balanced approach that was working,” said Richard Corriea, a retired San Francisco police commander and west-side activist, addressing nearly two dozen supporters as he submitted initiative paperwork at the San Francisco Department of Elections.
Backers — who said they envisioned “a very grassroots campaign” — must collect 10,615 signatures by July 6 to qualify the measure for the ballot.
