MI-SOS: Detroit city clerk Janice Winfrey (D) asked to run for secretary of state

Lansing — Janice Winfrey, the city of Detroit’s longtime clerk, said she has been asked to consider running for Michigan Secretary of State and wouldn't dismiss the possibility that she would get in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Winfrey, in an interview Thursday with The Detroit News, said the role is not one for an individual who “just needs a job.” Instead, she said, the race needs an experienced election administrator who knows the work and is committed to protecting elections.

Winfrey has served as Detroit city clerk since she defeated longtime incumbent Jackie Currie in 2005.

“That race needs a good, solid clerk,” Winfrey said of the internal Michigan Democratic Party race for secretary of state. “And we need a good, solid clerk who can win.”

Garlin Gilchrist and Barbara Byrum have all of the oxygen for that particular race. Leaning towards Gilchrist.

And was busted trying to use her position to get out of traffic tickets. She’s the old school version of Detroit politics.
