It was a rough few days for both motorists and recovery teams after warm weather sent vehicles plunging through ice and into a handful of Minnesota lakes last week and into the weekend.
In Buffalo Lake, a small community located about an hour's drive west of Minneapolis, several vehicles broke through due to temperatures above freezing, and in some places, rain, further weakening the ice.
KRWC Radio reported the incidents at Buffalo Lake occurred in shallow water so vehicles did not become fully submerged, but towing crews had their work cut out for them when pulling each vehicle to shore.
Luckily, no injuries were reported.
But Buffalo Lake wasn't the only city having issues.
Some residents of Detroit Lakes, located about three-and-a-half hours north of the Twin Cities, also had to be pulled to safety after going through Big Detroit Lake.
According to a post from the Becker County Sheriff's Office, at least one vehicle went in near a public access.

(17,172 posts)Ruined vehicles and oil and gas in the water. Well done. Enjoy the fish. Maybe learn how temperatures work.

(23,195 posts)I heard that phrase somewhere. (wink)
If the temperature is above 25º F. don't drive onto a lake. That seems kind of obvious even though I've never been ice fishing.
When I was a kid in Scouting, we had a winter jamboree on a frozen lake. It was -20º and the lake was frozen so solid, we built a campfire on top of the ice!

(6,847 posts)To decide that you are going to drive on the lake and to hell with reality and physics.
And, some still wonder why that orange gibbon got reelected.
(Now, next week.... they should be fine to drive a semi on the damned lake since they want to so freaking bad...)

(28,586 posts)It's in Renville County and why anyone would think it's been cold enough in that part of the state for the ice to be thick enough to support vehicles is beyond me.

https://kstp.com/kstp-news/local-news/woman-arrested-for-keeping-dogs-inside-vehicle-trunk-in-freezing-temperatures/A woman has been arrested after reportedly leaving two dogs inside a vehicles trunk in November.
22-year-old Isabella Marie May faces a misdemeanor charge of mistreatment of animals, which carries a 90-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.
. . .
Police arrived at Village Parkway and found a vehicle that matched the tips description and heard sounds from inside.
At the time, the air temperature was 17 degrees, and frost was on the vehicles windows, according to court documents.
While investigating, the officer was approached by May, who said the vehicle had belonged to her childs father and that she had parked it in its current location.
She also reportedly told police that she knew the dogs were inside the vehicle, stating she could not take them inside due to her not being allowed to have animals inside her residence and was keeping them in the car.
Officers said two dogs were inside the trunk and noted there was no food or water for them.
Any water would have been ice and any food would be extra crunchy
