Springfield braces for 30-day targeted ICE surge after Haitian TPS ends

The message from Springfield City School District Superintendent Bob Hill says a meeting last week led by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and state leadership, emergency management officials and others discussed that a federal immigration enforcement initiative may begin sometime after the TPS deadline.

“Federal authorities signaled an enforcement window of at least 30 days,” the message says. “A federal list of individual removal orders has been identified in Springfield as an initial focal point for enforcement activity, with discretion to detain additional individuals encountered who lack lawful status.”

The News-Sun verified the email’s authenticity with the district and the governor’s office confirmed DeWine recently met with Hill.

That said, the MAGA trumpers have been awful to the Haitians and want them gone....Such fools as they have a dying town and these people helped revive the towns economy... They, Springfield invited them there and they did their part to fit in and fill jobs that needed filled...

“This despicable surge in lawless ICE officers descending upon Springfield will ignite swells of fear within the Haitian community, terrorize our Black and Brown neighbors, and cause considerable damage to citizens and non-citizens alike. Following the government’s senseless, brutal killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, it is clear that ICE poses a grave threat to all who call Ohio home. We the people must rein in ICE abuses before anyone else is hurt or killed. The ACLU of Ohio urges state and local elected officials to do everything in their power to protect the 30,000 Haitians living in Central Ohio. We call on the U.S. Congress to reject a DHS budget that allows these lawless agencies to continue putting our communities in danger.”
