PROVIDENCE, R.I. Republican state Sen. Elaine Morgan has proposed a bill that would make the teaching of cursive writing mandatory for grades 1 through 6 in classrooms statewide.
WPRI-TV reports Morgan was inspired to write the bill after learning that her 14-year-old son was unable to pen a proper signature.
Currently, theres no requirement that cursive be taught in the state. Only 14 states have made the practice mandatory in public schools.
Morgan says shes spoken with teachers who called cursive a dying art. Her bill stipulates that students should receive at least 20 minutes of cursive instruction each day.
