VA-HD98: Democrats select candidate to run in House District 98 special election; Republicans to decide tonight

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Republicans and Democrats are choosing who they want to see in a special election next month to replace Virginia Beach Delegate Barry Knight, who passed away on Feb. 19.

Democrats originally planned to hold a nomination caucus for the House District 98 special election, but on Monday announced Cheryl Smith would be their nominee, as she was the only candidate to file by the established deadline.

Smith was the Democratic nominee for last November's election, where she lost to Knight by more than 10 percentage points.

"We are excited and energized to support Cheryl Smith as our Democratic nominee," VBDC Chair Sean Monteiro said in a statement. "Cheryl brings the commitment, values, and community focus needed to represent House District 98 with strength and integrity."
