Seattle philanthropist Rebecca Benaroya dies at 103

"She showed up."

Those three words were used to describe the impact of Seattle philanthropist Rebecca "Becky" Benaroya in a statement from her family following her death Wednesday in Palm Springs, California. She was 103.

Benaroya — together with her late husband, transformational commercial real estate developer Jack Benaroya — made outsized contributions to Seattle, including funding to build two landmarks: Benaroya Hall — the world-class home of The Seattle Symphony, which opened in 1998 — and the Benaroya Diabetes Center and Research Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center.

"The Benaroya name became synonymous with Seattle’s skyline and its cultural institutions, and Becky made certain it stood for something in the lives of ordinary people too," the Benaroya family said in a statement Friday.
