Am having trouble with the way my mouse scrolls

Google says: To set your mouse scrolling wheel on Windows 10, open the Control Panel, go to "Mouse," then select the "Wheel" tab where you can adjust the number of lines scrolled per wheel movement...

So I have done this at least a dozen times and it scrolls 2-3 lines at a time (my preference), then after ~half an hour, the wheel is back to skipping numerous lines.

This started happening within the last 4 weeks (though when I check the drivers, it says they're fine (supposedly).
The same bad bevavior happens with a different mouse.

All my mice have been wireless.

1. I've had that problem with my wireless mouse

First thing I did was to check and replace the batteries.
Another thing to check is how far away is the mouse from the dongle or is there anything between the mouse and the dongle.

2. I have had this problem over the years also

I use a few laptops with wireless mice. Microsoft and Logitech models. Once you have replaced the battery, shut down the computer,
remove the USB dongle, reboot the computer. Once the computer is rebooted, turn on the mouse and reinstall the USB dongle. The computer should recognize a new device and ask you if you want to continue installation. This normally works.
Most mice have a LED on it that lights up when you turn it on. Green or blue is usually good. Red or no light is mostly likely the battery.
However I have also had the mouse or USB dongle go bad so I got a new mouse.

3. I've had a wheel get clogged up with gunk... dust, dog hair....

I was able to take the mouse apart and clean it up.

Looking at my current mouse, I don't see an easy way to open it up... and would probably be inclined to replace it since they're not terribly expensive.

4. Sometimes, the wheels, contacts, and buttons just wear out. I keep a supply of these sub $10 mouse devices on hand.

They work very well for me, and I do intricate computer design work.

You never know when you'll need another one.
