Democrats Keep Chasing the 'MODERATE' Voter -- This Pollster Says That's a Mistake

“The weakness for the Democratic Party is not that they are perceived to be extremist or elitist, it's that they're perceived to be weak… not standing up for their coalition, not being effective in government. And honestly, that's a harder problem to solve.”

In this Substack Live conversation, Zeteo contributor John Harwood sits down with independent pollster G. Elliot Morris to break down the Democrat's centrist strategy and how the move can hurt the party in the long run.

Despite Democrats’ struggle to rally voters around a centrist agenda, some party leaders continue to argue that appealing to the middle-man is the path back to power.

Morris emphasizes the fact there are no ‘median voters’ — only those with mixed views who pay little attention. Harwood and Morris also dive into Trump’s illegal war in Iran and whether or not there is a chance that Republicans will lose both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.

We need to convince voters that we will make difference in their lives.

We need those swinging white suburban minivan soccer mom undecided voters - all 10 of them. They are leaning Republican so we need to tack right to get 'em. Never mind the base - where are they going to go?

it impossible to find a decent one. I carefully examined the two candidates for not only their beliefs but their ability to accomplish them. Starry-eyed is okay but Starry-minded will not help. In those days, a good republican could accomplish more good than a bad democratic candidate who would vote against good policies because they didn't go as far as he/she fantasized.
Remember, those were also the days of the dixiecrats. Now that the repugs have turned away from democracy, it's a different story.

I will concede that these days, there's no such creature that can be considered moderate who supports candidates of both parties unless one thinks that voting for nazis is the same as voting for democracy.
