Canadian wildfires create hazardous air in Midwest and Northeast

CHICAGO—Acrid haze sat low to the ground Thursday as wildfire smoke from Canada continued to blanket the Midwest and Northeast, creating a strain on visibility and unhealthy air quality that is expected to last at least through Friday night.

Winds swept the smoke from the north, where the Canadian government reported more than 100 uncontrolled wildfires. Swaths of the Northeast and Midwest were under National Weather Service air quality alerts as unhealthy levels of particulates were carried into the region. Multiple alerts were extended into Friday as the smoke crawled southeast.

The air quality was hazardous in parts of the Northeast and the Great Lakes, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA suggested people, especially children and the elderly, shorten how long they spend outside.

Air quality index, or the general quality of the air, is typically measured on a scale from 0 to 500. An AQI value above 101 is unhealthy for some people, and above 151 is unhealthy for everyone, the EPA says.
