Making beef stew on a cold sunny Sunday

Last edited Sun Mar 29, 2026, 12:58 PM - Edit history (1)

2# of chuck roast, potatoes, celery, onions, beef broth, tomato paste, low & slow cooking, a half hour before serving cabbage & mushrooms added in.
No real recipe, just what I rember seeing my Mom & best friend do.

Sometimes meal prep will smell so danged good.

4. Stove top will take about 2-3 hrs. I have too many onions in this batch.

5. I don't think, if it is homemade, that one can mess up the recipes that they cook up. It's a meal

I put the thermometer in a beef cube, it was done. Carrots & potatoes are soft.
So now everything is resting before I divvy it up for freezing for next weeks

7. No carrots? I put a lot of carrots in mine.

They're starchy so they provide some natural thickening and I like the taste.

I don't use tomato in my beef stew at all. I find it gives a metallic taste (I think this is peculiar to me). I also often turn the leftovers into pot pie or add dumplings, and neither one would work with tomatoes, IMO.
