Jake the vicious killer attack dog has just crossed the rainbow bridge..

Well, okay, he was a ten pound chihuahua, but I think he would like to be known that way.

We think he was 17 years old; got him from his foster home six years ago when his age was estimated at eleven.

We didn't know how much time we would have with him; we're delighted to have had him as long as we did.

He chose Mrs. Permanut as his person, and started growling and nipping at me when he was in killer attack dog mode. I thought it was hilarious, but I'm not sure he knew that.

He retired a couple years ago from killer attack dog duties, and decided we could be buddies. I'm gonna miss him, you know how that goes.

20. Epitaph to a Dog by George Gordon Byron 1788 - 1824
Sun Dec 14, 2025, 07:17 PM
Dec 14

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown to Glory but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below:
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master's own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonour'd falls, unnotic'd all his worth,
Deny'd in heaven the Soul he held on earth:
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debas'd by slavery, or corrupt by power,
Who knows thee well, must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye! who behold perchance this simple urn,
Pass on, it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend's remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one—and here he lies.

We have Chihuahua we picked up from a rescue organization 10 years ago. They thought he may be 2 yo at that time. I was in the hospital for a month just days after we picked up, so he bonded with Mr. GentryDixon. I've had more bites and wounds from getting too close to his person. I've noticed in the last year he has mellowed out & will allow me to get close to the two of them together. I guess in his old old age it's too much trouble to be on guard at all times.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my sweet, baby girl dog last week. We've had her in our lives since she was 9 weeks old. She was 14 and suffering with pain. I am picking up her ashes this afternoon. It has been rough. I know what you are going through, and feel your pain. DU has been so very supportive and they have helped me a lot.
