Related: About this forumAllergic to kitties? A suggestion....
After losing our last dog to cancer and age (he was a 13yo Lab), I desperately needed another furkid in the house. However, because of our age, we were turned down by rescue group after rescue group when we tried to adopt another dog. Luckily I found a private rescue lady who specialized in kitty adoptions. The problem there was that my hubby is very allergic to kitties. He does loves them however.
My friend, dear DUer Bayard came to "our rescue" with a great suggestion: feed the kitty a non-allergenic food. I had never heard or considered that but knew that she's truly an expert on "all things critters,"* and so we trusted her advice and got a kitty. It has worked out well. We've had our feisty little girl for 2yrs now without causing my hubby any major allergy attack.
This is what has REALLY helped to mitigate his allergic reaction:
I'm really not being paid to endorse this but thought I'd pass along the advice for any of you kitty-loving folks suffering with allergies. It doesn't stop an allergic reaction entirely but it sure has helped my hubby.
The only drawback is that it's a bit expensive.
Thanks again to my dear smart friend (& former vet tech & animal expert) Bayard.

Bayard must be one sharp cookie! I never would have thought of this!
Has your hubby looked into NAET for allergies? It's a non-invasive method of retraining one's autonomic response to allergies.
A former friend had very severe allergies, went to a practitioner & all allergies were successfully eliminated pretty quickly.
Here's a link, if interested:

Ps - Sorry you were turned down for dog adoptions. Did you try your local shelter?
