(21,154 posts)I cleaned up the mess.
Cat vomit is nothing new when you have cats.
I had no idea he was sick.
Maybe all of the stupid fireworks being set-off did it?
I don't know. His brother Mr. Andy died last year in Feb. on Valentine's Day.
Damn!

(21,154 posts)The vet wants $89 to bury him.
I don't know what to do.
He is a huge cat and I managed to put him in his carrier and it is out in the garage with him in it.
Rigor mortis had set in already when I found him.
The other cat I have is all upset. She doesn't know what happened to him.
They sort of had a love/hate relationship w/one another but in the end they did love one another.
I had three cats last year at this time, now just the one left.

(53,436 posts)you have a neighbor or friend who could bury him for you? I once had to get a neighbor man to lift a 125 pound dead dog into my station wagon to get her cremated.

(21,154 posts)I asked for help a couple of times and ewwww boy!
It was a rough go for me out there today and yes, I slipped a couple of times on the wet grass/soil out there.
I am still alive anyway, like it or not.

(2,818 posts)All of the cats I've had were some kind of rescue, even the Savannah, the Siamese and the Maine Coon. Sometimes, if I noticed that one of my kidkats was failing, I'd adopt a young repacement before the elder traveled down the Nile to the Isle of Reeds. It never failed that I'd find the kitten snuggled up with their senior, with the two comforting one another.

I'm glad I didn't have to do this with Silver.

I think I'll try to dig a 3' hole in the backyard.
The soil is soft and wet.
I think I can pull it off.
He loved his home and was afraid to leave here.

(15,549 posts)I used to have them all cremated. Then we bought property out of the city and I decided to stop spending already-tight funds on cremation which has become exorbitant. I am a single woman and theres no one to help.
Take a few breaths, calm yourself and try to do what must be done. You will have a sense of peace knowing he is truly at rest. I am NOT trying to diminish the grief you feel in any way. Just years of experience with this. Theres something about the finality. Right now, youre still feeling the limbo.
Sending hugs and PM me if I can help in any way.

(663 posts)They always go too soon. I'm glad he went peacefully in his sleep. None of my animals have done that. But what a heartbreak to come home to! I know how you feel about going from 3 to 1. It's very difficult for you and your remaining cat. Stay strong 🥰

(133 posts)Silver was so lucky to have a loving home. I think your adrenaline will kick in to get you through the burial. I wish I was your neighbor. I would come and tackle this with you. In the spring you could get a silver leafed plant like dianthus or dusty miller and plant it there for a forever reminder of Silver. I am so sorry.

(502 posts)When my animals pass naturally, I bury them but I seldom go 3 feet down. Maybe 18 inches. If the weather is frigid, I have the luxury of a manure pile, which is almost never frozen underneath. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Peace to you !

(16,215 posts)it is not expected. He looked like a magnificent boy in that photo you posted.
Don't hurt yourself digging a hole for his burial. Can you get him cremated? If you don't have the money, please message me -- I would be glad to help with that. I'm sure we can work out a way to do that. Okay?

(875 posts)I had a similar experience recently. My girlfriend came home after work and found our Redd Cat dead by the back door. We cried for days. I'm still not over it.
When our pets become old or ill we can prepare ourselves and comfort them in their last days. When they are young and healthy and just pass away, it is a terrible gut punch. I'm a little misty now. I'll send you a hug for comfort.

(25,875 posts)...full well that we will likely outlive them, but we choose to do so anyway because life is so much better with them in it that it is worth it even after they are gone.
He also said that one of the very best ways to honor a departed pet can be to offer your loving home to someone else who needs you.
We have, oftener than not, typically not waited very long to welcome a new furry friend when we have had to bid farewell to an "old" one. We never refer to them as replacements. Rather, they are successors.

(21,154 posts)I'm old, sick and alone except for my other kitty Missy, the black cat. She is 8 years old now.
She is enough for me now.
I hope I will be around to see her for a long time and that I don't pass away myself.
I'll be redoing my estate plans now. They had a provision in it to care for Andreas and Silver in it and I found out that some of the people named in my estate plans aren't very what they seem to be.
Thanks for the thoughts however. For the most part, I agree that it is a good idea.

(21,154 posts)It is starting to rain outside.
There is a lot of rock in the yard and I got about 18" down. I put a large bath sheet in the hole I dug and he fit inside just right.
I have some Holy Water from Knock that is 40 years old. I sprinkled some of that on him along with a prayer. I hope it helped him and me.
It was rough going for a pushing 70 year old woman w/MS. The job is done now and if I need more soil to cover it up better, I have it.
I can see his grave from the bedroom window so he is still home where he always wanted to be.
Thank you everyone for your kind replies.
I'm so exhausted.
I need to eat and go to bed I think.
My other cat, my sweet black kitty is here with me. She seems upset.
We both are.
Thanks again everyone.

(15,549 posts)As I said upthread, I have a rescue. I lost one on Monday and had to dig the grave. It is not a pleasant task, and I am still emotional. But there are times that we just have to pull it together and do what must be done.
Then we can fall apart when we know it is done.
I am so sorry for your loss. We sign on to this each time we try to help one, and we do it because we care very much. May you get some rest, have some peace, and if you believe like I do - there is no doubt that these creatures deserve paradise. They are all much more decent than many human beings. He is whole again and watching you grieve the loss of him. He wants you to be okay.

My life is not what it could be. I need to work on getting things together!
Its a mess around here now, mud everyone from digging that grave in the rain.

(21,154 posts)I can barely move today after the burial.
It is raining hard today so had I not done it yesterday, I would have had to take him to the vet and have him buried elsewhere.
I don't know where I found the strength to do it but it is a done job.
Rest in Peace my Dear Silver. You were loved, greatly.

(6,555 posts)No way around that.
Did he live a good life?
I'm sure he did.
I still remember the sudden deaths of past cats. Some left decades ago.
They live on in our memories.
We did our best to give them a good life.
That is the important part.
No guilt, no shame, just remember the good times.
