The nicest thing happened today,

and I just had to share it.

Someone came to my back door. I live in the country, so I don't let just anyone in the house.

She was carrying a large book. I thought it was some missionary type, so I was reluctant to answer the door.

After a couple of seconds, I recognized her as one of my neighbors, whom I do not see very often. She looks older, but I knew her, so I let her in.

She had a beautifully preserved old book, and she wanted to know if I knew how to find out its value. Actually, she has a box of books, at home, because an older relative has passed, and she is cleaning things.

She needed help, and the local library would not give her a clue. She spoke with her adult children, who used to be my library patrons before I retired. They told her to ask me. They told her that I was the only librarian in town who knew anything, and I should be asked any and all reference questions.

I found the value of her book quickly. I printed out some information for her and we had a nice talk.

I don't know what is the matter with them at that local library. They don't have enough staff. Many of them are poorly trained and unqualified to do anything. I don't even go in there any more, except when I need to renew my card. I use a library about twelve miles away, in another community. I still have a few colleagues down there who have not retired.

Actually, I get reference questions every once in a while. I am glad to help people, even though I am retired.

....we've seen the last several days.

BTW, I know what you're talking about with respect to your reluctance. A few times a year we have the Jehovah's Witnesses come through our neighborhood. Luckily we see them coming and NEVER open the door to them. And if I have time, I call the neighbors to warn them.
