I had to start this thread a little early because I must have a nap.
I am just finishing Vacationland by Sarah Stonich.
I have really enjoyed this, it is everything scarletwoman said it was.

Except to dust off The Hobbit because my son rented "the Desolation of Smaug" and I need to purge that travesty out of my brain.

(50,983 posts)you are not a fan of the Desolation of Smaug. I've never seen it. I did see a TV advertisement for it.

(12,345 posts)The director decided to stitch some scenes from the Hobbit that were barely recognizable from the book seasoned with lots of extraneous blood letting with the addition of new characters with a romantic triangle that would be OK but takes the time away from the original characters personalities maturing as they meet the various complications in the journey.
Out of 5 stars I give it 1 for the Dragon animation.

More likely, misery loves company.
Those who reviewed it on Amazon for the most part loved it. A few had the same take as me.

(23,156 posts)I just got that one out of the library and as soon as I finish Killing Rain by Barry Eisler, the French book is next.

(813 posts)Second of two books in the Vorkosigen Saga that involve Miles's, the primary series protagonist, parents. The series overall mixes space opera and romance and mysteries and whatever else she decides to throw in.

(50,983 posts)Sounds interesting. Have you read many of her books? My wife doesn't go for science fiction, unfortunately. But that wouldn't stop me from reading them.

(813 posts)She's won multiple Hugo and Nebula and Locus awards.
The Vorkosigen series, mentioned about is her science fiction series. She also has a couple of fantasy series, one starting with _The Curse of Chalion_ and the other with _The Sharing Knife_. I've read each of the first books in those series, but haven't been immediately drawn to read the rest--I liked them well enough, I just have plenty of others in the queue. Maybe if I end up with audiobooks for them some day then I'll listen on a trip.
The Vorkosigen series, though, I like a lot. Miles, the primary character is physically challenged but finds was for brains and chutzpah to become a force in his universe. Some is really funny, some is really sad. Just nice.

(31,893 posts)I have to tell you, it's a lovely feeling to get feedback!
I'm still dutifully slogging through The Shadow Country by Peter Matthiessen. It IS a good book, but it sure has been slow going. I'm still not sure if I'm going to stick it out through to the end. It is definitely not what I would call a fun read.
But if I make it through this one, re-reading Moby Dick ought to be snap!

(50,983 posts)When we were children my family took vacations in the North country. Vacationland sort of put me back there in the carefree days of my youth. This was in Michigan but it seemed like a world away to kids from Ohio.
My wife just started Vacationland. I'm sure she will like it too. It's right up her alley.
