I just finished Blood Meridian.. (NSFW)
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!?!
I guess my best guess is something like The Judge is supernatural, but he isn't Death...he's the spirit of murder, strife, conflict, war...and the Kid, the Man, could never really escape him, Eventually that spirit will catch up with you.
Then again, I'm probably wrong. I shouldn't have read The Road first, that's just numbing..
