Related: About this forumI'm not liking the lack of NFL parity
After being old enough to remember the start of New England's dynasty, Tom Brady miraculously finding wins out of nowhere and terrorizing the league, we don't get a reprieve, we get a successor.
Five Super Bowl appearances in six years, and that one year was a loss in the AFC Championship in overtime.
We just saw this matchup two years ago, and we're seeing it again so soon.
We live in a world right now where the NBA has more parity than the NFL and I actually appreciate the NBA more in times like these - where, since 2019, two franchises have won their first NBA Championship, another won for the first time in 50 years and nobody has repeated. I think this year, it comes down to three teams - OKC, Cleveland and Boston, but that's less predictable than, "LOL, Chiefs win again!" Giannis, Jokic and Tatum have rings, with SGA having a great chance at joining them this year.
Meanwhile, Lamar Jackson might be on his way to a third MVP and no Super Bowl appearances. Josh Allen is a top three quarterback in the league and no Super Bowl appearances.
The Dodgers have such deep pockets and it's annoying, but in the 21st Century, we have yet to see a team win back-to-back World Series Championships. Maybe in some years, you can buy *a* ring, but when was the last time an MLB team bought a dynasty? The 2010s Giants had many homegrown stars leading the way and never went back-to-back. More than half the league has won a World Series Championship this century, and it's 2025 and the biggest dynasty there's been so far was a Giants team that never repeated.
The NHL has had two repeats in the last 10 years in the Penguins and Lightning, but even then, the Capitals, Blues, Golden Knights and Panthers have all won their first Stanley Cups in that timespan, too.
The NFL has what? Brady, Brady, Brady and Mahomes, Mahomes, Mahomes.
And unless it's my favorite team that's the dynasty, it's not fun. I find sports more enjoyable when there are different teams winning, when there are different teams in the mix, and it's fresh and it's unpredictable and I can't see a team winning from a million miles away.
But maybe that's just me.

(181 posts)Kansas City is doing this with less and less. They're paying Mahomes a ton of money and watching receivers leave, one after another. They're winning anyway. Yes, I'd like to see some other team in the Super Bowl. But I can't say the Chiefs didn't earn this trip.
It can be said that Mahomes gets some calls that other QB's don't get, and that's basically because he's the biggest star in the league, and in any league big stars get shown a little favoritism. But I don't remember any game where the Chiefs would have lost if Mahomes hadn't gotten that call.
Chiefs are winning anyway. What would you want the NFL to do?

(7,611 posts)Great QBs, great defenses and a bunch of role players on offense.
Play that game ten times Chiefs and Bills win 5 each.
Eagles have a great defense, great running back, great receiver and very good QB, so on paper they are more talented.
But the reality is that teams like the Chiefs and Eagles just know how to find and develop pieces that fit while still paying their big stars

(2,321 posts)Why didnt they utilize James Cook down the stretch? Ive seen him come up big time after time this season. He was doing his thing tonight, then Cook isnt used when hes needed the most?

(7,611 posts)Didn't run a ton down the stretch, you let your star player make plays.

(16,721 posts)The NFL has altered so many rules/enforcement to favor the passing game, QB non-injury, and higher scoring that it is no longer possible to win the SB without a top talent at QB. The game is totally distorted to favor having the better QB, period. That's the majority factor, by a large margin, now. To a degree which was never so for the first 40-some SBs.
IOW, the days of winning with an extraordinary defense and mid QB (Ravens-Dilfer, Bears-McMahon) will never be seen again, and winning with a very good but not great QB is going to be rarer than it was historically.

(2,321 posts)Id also say coaching is a very large factor in this, too.

(181 posts)Joe Burrow is a terrific QB with zero championships. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson: same. Whereas, look at Patrick Mahomes stats last year and this year, and you'll see: the Chiefs are winning right now with a mid QB and an outstanding defense. It's just that they're paying that QB a ton of money, and in fairness, that QB tends to be a LOT better at the end of games.

(107,531 posts)They were incredible. Mahomes is a once-in-a-generation QB, but that should take NOTHING away from the defense on that team. And yes, Reid is an exceptional coach. I'd note that the Eagles have peaked at the most optimal time and look like a powerhouse. The SB should be quite interesting.
That said, I am not ignoring the impacts of $$$ in NFL. But honestly, I am MORE concerned of its current and near-future impacts on NCAA college football with this out-of-control NIL process and nearly limited transfer portal. Some balance and sanity needs to return--while ensuring fairness to the players.

(14,433 posts)That the Eagles weren't throwing for more than 200 yds/,game. If you invest in a great O-line and get a fantastic RB in gree agency, it's not necessarily a QB driven team, although the Eagles showed yesterday that they can be that, too.

(58,593 posts)result in wins. Other teams just have to do better. Don't blame the teams that have it together.
Good players especially make the difference. It was Brady, not Belicheck all along as he won a Super Bowl and went to the conference championship game the next season. Belicheck's Pats fell off the map after Brady left.
Good drafting, coaching and players.

For that reason, the next name that might be frequently mentioned in association with multiple Super Bowl wins is Jayden Daniels. Or maybe he winds up the bride's maid repeatedly despite all that talent, like Jalen Hurts (unless Hurts has his moment in a couple of weeks).
