1. Wasn't there some sort of accident there recently that did additional damage?

I remember hearing about that. And it definitely looks worse than it during that spate of explorations that were so well publicized quite a few years ago.

2. I remember this item from earlier this year. The deterioration is now rapid.

The wreckage was relatively intact when it was first discovered in 1985. Later, when James Cameron filmed the wreckage for his 1997 movie, its state had not deteriorated all that much over the preceding ten years. However, now the deterioration is rapid.
