Snow chances rise for Sunday in D.C. area; some places could see several inches
*Although subject to change, snowfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches seem most likely in the D.C. area, with the highest amounts probable north and west of the Beltway. Some models show the potential for 4 to 8 inches in areas that receive the most snow, but its unclear whether amounts that high will materialize, and its hard to pinpoint where they might occur.
Theres also still a chance that some areas, especially along and east of Interstate 95, start as rain before enough cold air arrives for precipitation to turn to snow. These areas have a lower ceiling for snow accumulation.
Because of the potential for significant snowfall in the colder parts of the region, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for northern Fauquier, western Prince William, Loudoun, western Montgomery, western Howard counties and counties to the north and west from Sunday morning through the evening. These areas have a chance to receive about 5 inches of snow, the Weather Service wrote.
Generally, expect travel conditions to gradually deteriorate Sunday especially toward the afternoon and evening when freezing temperatures and accumulating snow become common throughout the region. Conditions will probably go downhill earliest in the colder west and northwest portions of the region. Snow should pull away from the area Sunday evening.
