When my Irish grandparents became US citizens, they had to sign a loyalty oath to the US and the Constitution.
If they violated it they were told they would be deported. They took it seriously and were very loyal to the US.
All their sons served in the US military.

(227,378 posts)My great-grandfather came as a young man and my great-grandmother came earlier with her family as a little girl. And their two eldest sons also served, they signed up together for WWI. My grandfather (the eldest) brought ammunition to the front on horseback. I have his discharge papers. And my great uncle served at the front. A few years ago I went to a ceremony where he was awarded the Silver Star. Four of his five children were there and his eldest daughter read letters he'd sent to his sister about the battle for which he won that award. Two Congressional districts brought his family flags which had flown over the Capitol - they were excited about the award since they'd never honored a WWI vet before. And I whispered to his daughter, do they know that we're all Democrats?

Yes some of the immigrants to this country defend it and try to live up to the promise of America.

(227,378 posts)They made him a citizen and sent him to France to serve for his new country - also WWI. I'm sorry that I never met either grandfather, I've heard such nice things about both of them - but they both died young, in the 1940s.
