While a ceasefire is largely holding in Gaza, Israel is intensifying attacks on the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military has killed at least 13 people in a major military operation targeting Jenin that began on Tuesday when Israeli troops raided the city, backed by airstrikes, drones and U.S.-made Apache helicopters, following a six-week siege. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers in the West Bank have been "emboldened" by Trump's lifting of sanctions on far-right Israeli settler groups. Further violence is increasingly likely, says Mariam Barghouti, a Palestinian writer and journalist based in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. "We're seeing Israel wage a war that very much resembles the practices they have committed in Gaza," with Palestinians left "completely defenseless," she says. "It's a very slow slaughter of Palestinians. If you survive a bullet, you don't know if you're going to survive daily life."

There are about 1.6 million Arab/Palestinian citizens of Israel, comprising about 21% of the total Israeli population, including one who sits on the Israeli Supreme Court. The "ethnic cleansing" narrative doesn't hold up under even the most basic type of scrutiny.

(55,000 posts)What the fuck else does that mean? You are excusing people who didn't vote for Biden/Harris by claiming it was because Biden/Harris didn't listen to their needs.
Just stop. Nobody here is buying that bullshit.
Uncle Joe
(60,966 posts)My family and friends weren't facing genocide, as my homeland, schools, hospitals and universities were all turned into rubble and I would wager that neither were yours.
I voted for Harris and Walz, but I can walk in the shoes of some people that couldn't bring themselves to do it.
People have different thresholds on what their conscious will allow them to do, that's just basic human nature.

(55,000 posts)Biden/Harris definitely listened to those with friends and family in Gaza. They did everything they could to lower civilian casualties, short of abandoning Israel. The idiots who refused to vote for Harris, especially those in Michigan who in fact went on to vote for Trump, didn't do it out of "conscience." They did it out of stupidity and spite. They are responsible for what is happening today. Fuck them. Fuck whoever voted for Trump or enabled his election by refusing to vote at all.
Uncle Joe
(60,966 posts)No one was pushing for Israel to be "abandoned" (speaking of word games).
Israel; ruled by right wing extremists is the overwhelming power of the region, the Palestinians were facing genocide.
Indicted war criminal Netanyahu is a close family friend of Jared Kushner and the writing was on the wall early on that he had no intention to do anything that would help Biden/Harris.
Longtime loyal government servants were quitting the State Department over our one sided policy.
Palestinian Americans weren't even allowed to speak at the convention, that's what I mean when I say "not listening."

(55,000 posts)If we don't provide military aid to Israel while it is at war with terrorists who started the war, then yes, we would be abandoning Israel. The Biden/Harris administration limited the kind of weapons Israel got and pressured for, and got, more humanitarian aid to Gazans and establishment of safe zones. Sadly, Hamas subverted all that by stealing the aid and setting up shop in the safe zones.
We get enough disinformation from Trump. You don't need to add to it. You especially don't need to stoke division among Dems on Gaza. All it did before the election, and all it is doing now, is HELPING TRUMP.
Uncle Joe
(60,966 posts)friends and homeland.
There is nothing random about genocide and Netanyahu is an indicted war criminal who was fully aware of the threat that *rump posed against our own democracy, but he didn't care or have anymore respect for democracy here in the U.S. than he does for the apartheid state of Israel.
We didn't limit the weapons enough by far and Netanyahu thumbed his nose continuously at Biden and any serious attempt at working out a permanent ceasefire.
The whole world knows it's genocide and if Hamas stole some of the supplies, Israel as the occupying power still had/has a legal responsibility to take care of the Palestinian people as a whole.
There was an estimated 25 to 30 thousand members of Hamas in a population of nearly 2 and third million Palestinians and almost half of them are under 17 years of age.
When we decide that international law or the United Nations doesn't matter anymore, that the ICJ's rulings are illegitimate, how is that different than *rump's trashing of the legal system here in the U.S.?
There is simply no excuse for genocide period and ignoring or supporting that did more to divide the Democratic Party than anything else.

(55,000 posts)What Gaza experienced was not genocide, it was a war. The folks screaming genocide literally put an orange Hitler in power with that bullshit. Now they are reaping what they sowed. Sadly, they fucked all the rest of us over too.
Uncle Joe
(60,966 posts)This was obvious within weeks both by Israel's actions and self-incriminating statements by members of Netanyahu's government.
SunSeeker
(55,000 posts)Instead, even using Hamas' high estimate that includes Hamas combatant deaths, there were 45,936 killed out of a population of 2.1 Million in this urban war. That is pretty low collateral damage for any war, let alone an urban war where combatants hid among civilians.
Biden got them their ceasefire, like he promised.
Alas, thanks to the Michigan fuckwits and their ilk that you and DemocracyNow! magnified, Trump won the election and is taking credit for the ceasefire, while at the same time letting Bibi do whatever he wants. You might finally get that genocide you've been crying wolf over. FAFO in the extreme.
Uncle Joe
(60,966 posts)Not to mention that figure doesn't include thousands if not tens of thousands of missing people buried in the rubble.
The whole world knows a genocide when they see it, that's why Netanyahu barred the world's press from reporting in Gaza then proceeded to deliberately target the Palestinians reporting from there.
You can blame the people of Michigan all you want while giving Netanyahu a free pass for not agreeing to this same essential ceasefire agreement last May.
He wanted *rump back in power no matter it how much it threatened our democracy, yet you seem to have no problem with that.
