Trump screws Republicans after Supreme Court bombshell - Another Day - Brian Tyler Cohen

BTC: Donald Trump's tariffs get smacked down by the Supreme Court, which is why Trump is taking a victory lap. This is just another day.

In politics, there is an age-old tradition of the Friday news dump. A practice where less than stellar news is dropped at the end of the week in the hopes that people will forget about it come Monday, but I don't think anyone is forgetting this news anytime soon.

(cut to video)
NBC Host: Breaking news, a major defeat for President Trump's economic agenda. The Supreme Court ruling the president does not have the authority to impose some of his sweeping global tariffs. A decision set to have a massive impact potentially on the economy here at home and also around the world as well.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Wait, so America is being unliberated. The Supreme Court is taking this historic win away. Why would they do that when consumers have been just ecstatic over their yearslong economic windfall?

(cut to video from NewsMax)
Judge Andrew Napolitano: Studies have shown that about 92% of the tariffs have been paid by the ultimate consumer.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Well, of course they'd say something like that over on the lefty liberal woke NewsMax. Well, what did the Supreme Court actually say?

(cut to video)
NBC News Reporter: The high court today saying the president essentially overstepped his authority trying to invoke a law that had never been used before by a president in this way. A statute that says nothing about tariffs, nothing about taxes, and the high court saying he does not have the authority to do this.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Huh. Donald Trump being told that he doesn't have supreme rule over our nation. Well, if I know anything about Trump, it's that he took it well.

(cut to video)
Trump: The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing and I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed for not having the courage to do what's right for our country. When you read the dissenting opinions, there's no way that anyone can argue against them. There's no way.

(cut to studio)
BTC: No way to argue against them. That's literally what happened. Look, I'm not looking to help this guy at all, but maybe someone wants to remind him that the judicial process isn't nine judges weighing in on presidential authority via dice roll.

Now, it's worth remembering that this really is Trump's Supreme Court. Through his appointment of three justices, he has been able to send our nation on a much more conservative path over the years, which makes statements like this one even more surprising.

(cut to video)
WH Reporter: Justices Gorsuch and Barrett, are you surprised in particular by their decision today? And do you regret nominating them?

Trump: I don't want to say whether or not I regret. I think their decision was terrible.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Okay. Uh, a little harsh, but not going to lie, for a man who sees every single setback as a personal attack against him, I was expecting way worse.

(cut to video)
Trump: I I think it's an embarrassment to their families. You want to know the truth? The two of them.

(cut to studio)
BTC: There's our guy. Yes. The families of Justice Barrett and Justice Gorsuch should be so embarrassed. Not because they tweeted out a racist video, or sexually abused women, or spent decades partying with a pedophile, but for ruling that tariffs are attacks. Boy, one can only hope that those robes cover their eyes because Thanksgiving is going to be pretty awkward this year

But besides simply expressing his anger this morning, Trump also spent some time trying to wrap his head around the idea of not being able to do whatever he wants.

(cut to video)
Trump: In other words, I can destroy the trade. I can destroy the country. I'm even allowed to impose a foreign country destroying embargo. I can embargo. I can do anything I want, but I can't charge $1.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Yes. It turns out that's how laws work. Wait, so in other words, if I'm 20 years old and I can have a Pepsi, a Sprite, a Gatorade, a club soda, I can drink anything I want, but I can't have alcohol. Pure insanity.

So now the big question becomes, what does Donald Trump do now?

(cut to video from NewsMax)
Judge Napolitano: What does the president do now? You got Republican majorities of both houses of Congress. Ask them for authority to impose tariffs.

NewsMax: Novel idea. Novel idea.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Well, of course they would say something like that over on the hippie mainstream media. Oh, come on. Newsmax again. So, I guess he's gonna work with Congress?

(cut to video)
WH Reporter: Why wouldn't you just work with Congress to come up with a plan to push tariffs?

Trump: I don't have to. I have the right to do tariffs and I’ve always had the right to do tariffs and it's all been approved by Congress. So, there's no reason to do it. All we're doing is we're going through a little bit more complicated process. Not complicated very much, but a little more complicated than what we had. We’ll be able to take in tariffs.

(cut to studio)
BTC: More tariffs. Yes, apparently Donald Trump is the world's greatest builder except when it comes to Donald Trump building support in his own party for his own terrible ideas.

But Trump's speech wasn't simply a hate-filled tirade. There were also some odd moments, too.

(cut to video)
Trump: I said to the owner of I made a speech at a factory. They made steel products and I said, "Uh, how are you? Nice to meet you. How's business?” “President? I'd love to kiss you." This is a very powerful man and I don't want to be kissed by that man.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Okay. Um, quick tangent, but I think this is the second time in two days that he's mentioned that he's not attracted to men.

(cut to video)
Trump: President Peña of Paraguay is here. President, President, thank you very much. Young, handsome guy. It's always nice to be young and handsome. Doesn't mean we have to like you. I don't like young handsome men. Women like. Men know I don't have any interest.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Has Trump looked in the mirror lately? He should be happy that anyone wants to look at him, let alone kiss him. I haven't been on the uh the apps in a minute, but is there a big market on Tinder for a guy with ballooning ankles and bruised baby hands? But back to Trump's stunning defeat.

(cut to video)
ABC News Host: The president responding to the news, saying that he is imposing an additional 10% global tariff across the board, effective immediately under section 122.

(cut to video)
Trump: Today, I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under section 122 over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Holy shit. After being handed down a stunning decision invalidating his signature economic policy, Donald Trump is doubling down. And I'll tell you who that really sucks for. Republicans.

Think about it. Barely months into his term and with the wind at their backs, Trump announced to the nation that he was placing a tax on consumers, which according to polls falls in the unpopular category. By a wide margin, Americans continue to say they disapprove of the Trump administration substantially increasing tariffs. 60% say this, including 39% who say they strongly disapprove.

Shocking, I know, but Republicans hands were tied. To defy Trump and call his tax less than liberating would be tantamount to treason as far as he's concerned. So they played along. They praised their king for his wise and gifted move of making the American voters pay more money for things. Stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him as he took his winning message to the American people.

(cut to video)
Trump: Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Funny how Trump reads so very well and has such great comprehension, yet he is the one guy who missed the message from this book.

But Republicans stood their grounds knowing that the Supreme Court would eventually weigh in and then this morning, they were handed a gift. Finally, the GOP could breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they suddenly had an out, that they could now wave goodbye to these very unpopular tariffs without having to defy Dear Leader. And that lasted for almost as much time as Howard Lutnick claims to have had lunch with Jeffrey Epstein.

(cut to video)
Howard Lutnick: …for an hour.

(cut to studio)
BTC: Sure. But because Donald Trump is so myopic, so ego-driven that merely the act of accepting a decision from America's high court is seen as a sign of weakness and defeat. Now all these Republicans in Congress get to go home to their districts and defend not just the racist tweets and the cover up of the Epstein files, but the chaotic economic policy that is taking money out of their voters pockets. Well, good luck to them. But as someone once said,

(cut to video)
Trump: I I think it's an embarrassment to their families.

(cut to studio)
BTC: I couldn't agree more.
