Let's talk about Trump wanting to keep the Tariff money and FedEx having other plans.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump wanting to keep the tariff money and FedEx having other plans.
The Supreme Court struck down Trump's Liberation Day tariffs and declared them unlawful. Despite the tax being ruled unlawful, Trump wants to keep the money and reporting says the Trump administration is already workshopping different ideas to keep the money it unlawfully collected.
While you do have some in the administration talking to the press about the desire to keep the money, the biggest evidence that Trump wants to keep it is his own statement. "They take months and months to write an opinion and they don't even discuss that point. I guess it has to get litigated for the next two years.
It doesn't have to be litigated at all. Trump could simply refund the money that was unlawfully taxed. Imagine Trump imposing an unlawful income tax, taking the money out of your check, and then when the tax is struck down, basically saying, "Sue me again to get your money back."
It seems like the administration is trying to find good rhetoric to convince people to let the government keep the money that created the costs passed on to them. Treasury Secretary and former soybean man Scott Bessent described giving back the money they unlawfully collected as the ultimate corporate welfare. Well, that rhetoric probably isn't going to deliver for the administration.
FedEx hit the administration with a double whammy. While the Court of International Trade has to sort through more than a thousand cases related to tariff refunds, the FedEx suit is probably the one that will catch Trump's attention. Because in a statement, the shipping giant said, "We remain focused on supporting our customers as they adapt to the latest regulatory changes and have taken a procedural step to preserve our right to refunds for IEEPA tariffs on behalf of our customers and FedEx. Our intent is straightforward. If refunds are issued to FedEx, we will issue refunds to the shippers and consumers who originally bore those charges. When that will happen and the exact process of requesting and issuing refunds will depend in part on future guidance from the government and the court.
Whether FedEx meant to or not, that one statement is going to give the White House heartburn. Not just does this blow a hole in the corporate welfare line they were working on, it also reminds people who actually paid for his unlawful taxes. It's not going to be seen as corporate welfare when it's a bunch of small American businesses waiting for FedEx and their army of lawyers to win the case and return the money Trump took from them.
The welfare for the rich was in the one Big Beautiful Bill which counted on tariffs to offset the tax breaks for the wealthy. See, the tariffs were going to be collected, the cost passed on to you. And poof, the rich could pay less again. Without the tariff revenue, that disastrous bill is even deeper in the red and Trump will once again drive America's debt up even further.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
