While it's true that in 2024 you have to be attentive and keep your eyes on the road, there will come a day when you can take a nap in the back seat.

My car has self-driving capacities now, but you still have to sit behind the wheel, ready to take over. It's gotten really good, but there have been a couple of times that I had to take over. It's rare though.

Would I want to sit in the back seat of my car while it self-drives with current technology and hardware? No. However, when it's perfected (5, 10, or 15 years from now), I would love to.

Every story has to start somewhere, and ours begins in 2013, when Elon Musk was just beginning to promise the world his cars would be self-driving. To his credit, he was predicting Tesla would be building a self-driving car by 2016

In 2014, Elon Musk continued to promise at least 90 percent self-driving by year’s end,

In 2015, Autopilot was fully rolled out to Model S drivers and Musk was promising the software would be able to handle freeways and simple roads in a matter of months.

2016 was the year of the now infamous demonstration video in which a Tesla Model X seemed to be driving itself. However, a former Tesla engineer recently testified he helped stage the video with Musk’s full knowledge. Sadly, 2016 saw the first confirmed fatality in a crash using Autopilot. You know what also didn’t happen? A fully self-driving car. Musk promised that next year would be the year, according to Insider:

I don't subscribe for self-driving (it's $99 a month), but Musk keeps giving out free month-long trials. Let me say that it's gotten really good. Not perfect, but very good. Much better than when I first experienced it last Spring when I got the car.

In rapid cut format. Is it supposed to be parody?
