NOAA performed necropsies on about half the whales and found that of those, 40% of the deaths were caused by human interaction, either being caught in fishing gear or struck by vessels.

or confusing whales with flying fish and believing fish would fly into the wind mills?

Frankly, I think it's about fossil extraction corporations being pissed off about being made obsolete.

The sonar is used when they survey the bottom to select sites for the windmills, or for other undersea construction like oil wells.

Don't know if there is research on the sound generated during operation, but sonar is used during site surveys and construction.
