Dietrich Bonhoeffer would recognize what we're up against. He faced the same enemies...

Not just the malevolent, but worse, their stupid followers. This isn't stupidity in the normal sense. Bonhoeffer's stupidity isn't necessarily correlated with actual intelligence, though low intelligence does make slipping into this kind of stupidity easier. If one can't think critically to begin with, one has less distance to fall.

is that groupthink is usually a defense mechanism to extreme fear, usually of nothing.

Terrify people with threats of this and that and offer them a bunch of platitudes and the support of some group or other, most of them will follow you anywhere. It's whythe attachment is so emotional and impervious to facts or logic, any attempt to contradict the bullshit auses the terror to surface. You can't confront orthodoxy, you have to find a way to kick the fear out from under it.
