He probably didn't have a visa that would let him work while here - and the seminar probably counted as work. That would fit with other folks coming here either to do work (bartered work for hospitality) or bringing in tools that suggest work might be done (tattoo tools) who have been tossed in prison and then deported.

My advice, at this point, would be to just stay away. But if you're coming here - make absolutely that if you are receiving anything of value in exchange for your work that you get the right kind of visa (B, O, P - for example)
