In reply to the discussion: Trump Won the Shutdown [View all]lakercub
(669 posts)Negotiating strongly and fighting like your constituents lives depend on it are apparently two different things. They got nothing here..NOTHING! A promise of a vote? Not good enough. You are completely incorrect that democrats were taking just as much damage as republicans on this. Absolutely no polls (or the recent election results) back this up in any way whatsoever. The dems had the upper hand here entirely and what they had to do was keep fighting until Republican lawmakers got to feeling too much pressure back home and caved...some eventually would have. MTG already did.
Between the election that just happened, the town halls that have cast a negative light on republicans all around the country, and the narrative that this was their shutdown (which absolutely was the prevailing narrative), republicans were really going to start feeling it at home. The ONLY way you break MAGA is to show these boot lickers that their devotion to Trump is going to cost them dearly and that comes with inflicting more and more pain on them. Well, that's gone, without a single real concession.
What's worse is we've seen when the republicans are in the minority they still do manage to get real concessions out of the dems. Why can't we do the same. You are arguing from a politics as normal standpoint. This republican party isn't normal and must have it's feet firmly pressed to the fire at all times or they will never see any reason to change what they are doing.
This was a disaster and this is NOT the time to support our leaders. This is the time to demand that they show real, long-lasting fight, and stop triangulating and doing politics like normal. It no longer works.
