(21 posts)Theoretically, democratic institutions, the system of checks and balances, and legislation should be enough to prevent a president from becoming an autocrat.
In the democratic world, there is no such a thing as a president doing whatever he wants without suffering any consequences. A Trump would never exist in a country like Brazil, Chile, or France. He would have been impeached a long time ago.
It's time to question whether the United States is not, in fact, a dictatorship. A country that is absolutely powerless before its ruler can be called anything but a democracy. If 330 million people are being held hostage by a single man, why are we treating this country like a conventional political regime?
