13. Ginned Up Emergencies

There once was a faction so stern,
Who cried, “It’s China’s turn to adjourn!
Declare an emergency, quick—
Pull a constitutional trick—
And grab powers we didn’t earn.”

They’d mandate new IDs at the gate,
Ban ballots that travel by freight,
Swap machines in the fall,
Just in time for it all—
How tidy when law won’t cooperate!

“Uh oh!” they would solemnly shout,
“An emergency’s breaking out!”
With a flourish and pen,
They’d try once again
To wrap extra powers about.

But the parchment they’re eager to bend
Lets the states on elections depend;
The Constitution is clear,
Despite bluster and fear—
That’s a power it does not lend.

If such a decree should appear,
Pro-voter attorneys will cheer:
They’ll race to the court,
File suit in short order—
And win, as the limits are clear.
