As ice melted, large volumes of water that had been trapped behind ice dams suddenly broke through, causing floods that would have remained in the collective memory of humans. In North America, the Mississippi and Columbia, among other rivers, suffered such floods. The Black Sea would have also filled with water at the time (from what I recall reading).
