(1,060 posts)I grew up indoctrinated into a cult, and I wasn't stupid. Yet it took years for me to break free. Indoctrination is powerful, especially if you limit input from alternative viewpoints, which is doctrine #1 in any cult. It took me years to break from that programming, so I have to give my kids some grace. The only way I can get through is to believe that they will eventually overcome, as I did. But I'm also aware that they may not. To answer the question more directly, I may not forgive them, but they are family that I specifically chose, and I can't give up on them either. I have to face the jarring fact that I must own part of their failure as a parent in their formative years. I feel as if their mom and I instilled good values, but apparently they couldn't withstand the toxic rightward pull from other influences.
