I think the average person doesn't realize that, for example, they are "eating bugs" whenever they use flour.

E.g., for wheat, there are grain beetles that will always be there in the silos/hoppers/vats and that will get ground up and mixed in with the resultant flour.

FDA has what they call a "Defect Action Levels" for how many "bug parts" are permitted per "x" amount of product (in that case, 75 "parts" (like mandibles or pieces of leg or antenna ) per 50 grams). The farmer who is following good practices, will do what they can to keep any infestations under control.

The more troublesome insects are the "stored food" ones that get in there AFTER the milling/processing - and for flour, mostly the "flour beetles" (and consumers who buy bagged flour sometimes will see those and even spark their own infestation). But that is a whole other issue.
