8. Pope Francis had life-long lung problems

including part of a lung removed as a young man. He said he didn't think he would last so long in the post.

IMHO, he incredibly survived this last illness because he had a few things he needed to do - one was speak truth to power, another was to see his people one more time, and also to celebrate Easter.

He did these things with his remonstration to Vance, a ride round the Vatican square in the popemobile (which amazed me), and celebrating the feast.

Then he was done, and walked on.

I'm not religious, but I am spiritual, and this I strongly believe. I'm not sure if we'll see his like again for a long time, but as he appointed the majority of cardinals during his long reign, we can hope for at least sanity.
