Deported Army veteran, pardoned by Gov. Pritzker, returns to US in bid to become citizen [View all]

CHICAGO (AP) -- An Army veteran deported to Mexico in 2018 says he's overwhelmed to be granted permission to re-enter the country for a final chance to become a U.S. citizen.

Immigration officials allowed Miguel Perez Jr. to come to Chicago for an immigration hearing. He has a green card as a permanent U.S. resident, but was deported last year after a 2008 drug conviction.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pardoned him last month, which Perez hopes helps his case.
