If you simply must use an extension cord, get a heavy-duty three-plug (grounded) one approved for the amperage of your heater. Most local fire departments can advise you if you are unsure, but certainly any you'd use should be minimally approved to handle your heater.

And don't-- for the love of DOG, leave them plugged in when you are not home!
